I’m very excited about the advent of so many cloud-based apps now. They make doing business much easier. But it can be daunting to know which apps to use. This is the first article in a series on figuring out the best apps to support your business’ back end.
You’re running a business, scheduling your staff across projects, and providing one-of-a-kind genius to help others achieve their dreams - how do you juggle all this?
My company, Verte Consulting, sets up and provides accounting for professional services clients on Xero and WorkflowMax, two great apps that integrate together with API (simply put: a language that lets two applications “talk” to each other).
The fastest way to grow your business is to plan it out. Even if you're not looking for an investment, creating a business plan is investing with your energy - an investment that is guaranteed high returns.

After a year-long process of being judged by successful companies and previous winners, Rod Drury recently won the NZX Entrepreneur of the Year Award, which landed him in the competition for the global title – it’s like the entrepreneurial version of the America’s Cup. This man is actively at the helm of Xero, making sure it stays its course with an eye on the future. The impressive part is that it’s not just his future or his employees futures – it’s for the future of the whole fleet of the eco-system, including partners and advisors.
Kirsten Barrie: Let’s talk about some specific Xero functions: what is the progress on developing quotes and other horizontal accounting functions?
Rod Drury: Currently we do have a solution for quotes, we have some really great partners that handle that aspect well....
Kirsten Barrie: That’s a very good philosophy. Juxtaposed, that leads me into asking what you think of Intuit’s acquisitions?
Rod Drury: We have a view that you don’t really want one vendor for all of your business tools...
